Los Lunas Family School Digital Academy offers flexible learning options to meet the learning needs students in grades 6th-8th.. Our students engage in a high caliber curriculum with personalized support from highly qualified teachers. It is a hybrid program in which students receive all content, instruction, and support online and report to campus at least one day a week.

There are many reasons why a family might consider online learning for their student. Here are some factors to consider when determining if online learning is right for your child:

• My student has the daily support of a Learning Coach to encourage and monitor their progress.
• My student has the self-motivation skills required to remain on track and engaged without constant guidance from a teacher.
• My student demonstrates age-appropriate organizational skills.
• My student is curious and likes to learn new things.
• My student understands that online learning often takes more time than face-to-face courses.
• Our family has time in our schedule to devote up to six hours per day to dedicate to online learning.
• Our family can create and follow a schedule which will allow my student to stay on track and catch up if they fall behind.
• Our family understands that coursework must be completed on time and that non-completion of work will affect my student’s educational goals and could require in-person coursework until the students is caught up.

Every student requires a “Learning Coach” or dedicated adult who has the time and motivation to support their student’s online and offline learning. Learning Coaches are often parents, but could be any reliable adult at home with the student each day.

The role of the Learning Coach is to:
• Create a daily plan or schedule to complete lessons and attend any live learning sessions.
• Provide a dedicated, distraction-free learning and work space.
• Guide the student through the lessons as needed.
• Discuss the concepts being taught.
• Assist with interactive tools and games.
• Oversee assignments.
• Help facilitate hands-on learning that may be in the course.
• Check for understanding.
• Keep the student on schedule and on pace.
• Communicate with the teacher as needed.

All grade levels will begin the year with a higher need of involvement from the Learning Coach and will gradually shift more responsibility to the student as independence, attention, stamina, and focus increase with practice and maturity.

Digital Academy students will have access to services including special education as appropriate to the IEP, counseling, etc.

• Our comprehensive curriculum is developed for online learning and is fully aligned to New Mexico and national standards.
• Rigorous core curriculum with courses that feature direct-instruction videos, student practice, assignments, performance tasks, and assessments.
• Cross-content project-based learning experiences that allow student collaboration and interaction. Students will participate in a minimum of two projects per semester.
• Students engage in learning activities that support multiple learning styles and a variety of ways to demonstrate understanding.
• A limited selection of electives will be available.

Explore the 6-8 Online Curriculum

• Digital Academy will follow all New Mexico Public Education Department rules and requirements including participation in mandated assessments.
• Students must have daily support of a Learning Coach.
• Students must meet daily attendance requirements.
• Students must complete coursework in a timely manner.

Our teachers are New Mexico certified teachers and employees of Los Lunas Schools. Our teachers are dedicated to each student’s success. They are trained in best practices in education, technology, and online learning. Our teachers will support students and families through whole group and small group instruction, coordinating projects and activities, monitoring student progress, and maintaining open communication with students and their Learning Coach.

• Students will be provided with a district-issued iPad. (Yearly technology user fees will apply according to district fee schedule).
• 9th-12th grade students will be provided with a district-issued iPad. (Yearly technology user fees will apply according to district fee schedule).
• High speed internet access in the home is preferred.
• Families with need will be provided with a mobile hotspot.
• Most curricular supplies and materials will be provided.
• Drive-by pick up times may be established as needed for families to pick up needed supplies.
• Families may be asked to provide basic school supplies and basic items found in most households.

Families may choose to form learning pods to share the Learning Coach role and provide additional support for one another. Pod groups must register with the school.
